We introduce the notion of generic design from a new perspective, though the term does have a history in fields like systems science and along somewhat different paths in cognitive science, artificial intelligence and software engineering. Such a view results in conceiving designing as a complex and emergent process with implications for design research, practice and pedagogy. This marks a shift from focusing on the artifact to the process of designing as a social, negotiated process. Given their role, it is critical to understand what cognitive artifacts are, how they are constructed, and how they should be managed. In contrast, their mismanagement quickly presents itself as design failures, sometimes catastrophic. Thus their role is essential to designing and their management is critical to successful completion of the process. The nascent language is a pidgin articulated through cognitive artifacts. When these people come together, they create, negotiate, evolve, and manage a nascent language with which they communicate the meaning of the product they design.

In today's design practice, these models get created and refined by multi-cultural, multidisciplinary teams that speak different languages, whether these languages are spoken language, disciplinary, or organizational language. We describe artifact theory in terms of several disparate views of design and bring them together leading to a unifying view. Hence, we propose the view of design as building and reuse of artifact theories as the basis for understanding design and for developing design environments. We observe that this involves both adaptation and reuse of elements of existing artifact theories as well as development of new elements. That is, designers not only produce a manufacturable description of the artifact, but also produce the corresponding artifact theory. While highly mature and well understood design domains may have complete artifact theories, in most domains artifact theories evolve during design. We argue that it is necessarily a contextual theory and hence is ephemeral. This theory encapsulates various types of synthetic, analytic and process knowledge and reconciles many disciplinary theories in the context of the artifact. To develop such an understanding, we introduce artifact theory as an interdisciplinary theory about an artifact that is essential for designing that artifact. An understanding of the nature and growth of design knowledge and its reuse is essential for implementing better design systems and effective design practices. As artifacts are designed, knowledge is accumulated gradually and - as this knowledge is organized and reused - designs and design processes are continually refined.
